KALININGRAD, January 18 (AVN) - Six servicemen and workers of the Russian Baltic Fleet died and 32 were injured in car accidents last year, Major-General Alexander Pustoutov, chief of the fleet's ordnance service, said on Thursday.
Over 80 percent of accidents involved service vehicles, Pustoutov told the Military News Agency. Such a high rate of car accidents in the fleet is explained by lack of conditions for compliance with safety rules, he stressed. Over 60 percent of accidents take place before the eyes of officers and warrant officers appointed chiefs of vehicle, as they practically abstain from controlling observation of safety requirements and traffic regulations.
Some 100 servicemen who had violated traffic regulations were brought before the fleet commission for service security last year, a spokesman for the fleet headquarters said. The commission found over 50 soldiers guilty of constant violations and fired them from military service.
