MOSCOW, January 18 (AVN) - A total of 955 emergency situations, including 606 man-made ones, occurred in Russia in 2000, a spokesman for the Emergencies Ministry told the Military News Agency on Thursday.
Large-scale fires and explosions in residential, social and cultural facilities account for a major share of man-made disasters, the spokesman said. The ministry registered 198 incidents of that kind, he said.
Besides, last year saw seven railway crashes, 16 aircraft crashes, 38 dangerous emissions of chemical substances, 19 emissions of radioactive substances, and over 30 serious car accidents that killed five or more people each, the spokesman said.
A total of 1,091 people died in emergencies and 11,347 more were affected by them in 2000. The year also witnessed five large-scale terrorist acts that killed 62 persons.
