FEDERAL TROOPS SET UP GARRISONS IN NINE EASTERN CHECHEN VILLAGES

KHANKALA, January 19 (AVN) - Federal troops in Chechnya's Nozhai-Yurt district that borders on Dagestan are setting up local military garrisons in accordance with Russian Chief-of-Staff Anatoly Kvashnin's order, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters in the North Caucasus told the Military News Agency on Friday.

Garrisons have been formed in nine villages of the district, the spokesman said. Each garrison comprises 50 to 150 people and the unit in a large village of Benoi comprises 400 servicemen and policemen.

Isita Gairibekova, head of the Nozhai-Yurt district administration, told the Agency she had visited many villages together with the military and talked to locals. "People long for restoration of peace, rely on help from the military in settling small organisational problems and believe that many problems will be settled on the spot without going to district centres or to Gudermes as soon as law-enforcers come to hard-to-reach mountain villages," Gairibekova said.
