KHANKALA, January 22 (AVN) - Chechen rebels launched over 120 attacks against federal units in Chechnya last week, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters told the Military News Agency on Monday.
According to the spokesman, of these 70 attacks took place in Grozny and Gudermes where some 800 guerrillas are operating. They are divided into small mobile groups four to seven men strong and report to warlords Barayev, Munayev and Akhmadov. Many of the rebels managed to obtain legal IDs and are participating in terrorist acts on signal.
Basayev's and Khattab's groups have become more active in the vicinity of Shuani, Benoi, Ersenoi and Vedeno. According to Russian secret services, Chechen rebels sent their emissaries to the neighbouring autonomous republic of Ingushetia to buy a great amount of explosives. The emissaries are also tasked to recruit guerrillas in Ingush and Chechen villages.
The spokesman for the unified federal headquarters said that some 40 recruits, including 15-year-olds, had come to the rebels' alpine training bases.
