POLICE CARRY OUT 28 OPs IN CHECHNYA SINCE WEDNESDAY

KHANKALA, February 22 (AVN) - Officers of temporary police departments in Chechnya have carried out 28 search and preventive operations since Wednesday, as spokesman for the Interior Ministry department for Chechnya told the Military News Agency.

Policemen checked 38,715 people and 15,304 vehicles in Grozny, Gudermes, Argun and the villages of Belgatoi, Vedeno, Vinogradnoye, Zandak, Znamenskoye, Itum-Kale, Ishcherskaya and others, the spokesman said. They registered 253 administrative offences, including 24 violations of passport rules, and seized three Kalashnikov assault rifles, two pistols, three hunting rifles, a Shmel flame thrower, 34 grenade launcher rounds, 54 hand grenades, nine shells, six mines, 3,216 small-arms cartridges, 1.4kg of TNT and 0.3kg of plastic explosives.

Eight illegal oil refineries were eliminated by police officers. At the same time, residents of the Vedeno, Achkhoi-Martan and Naurskaya villages handed over to the police a Kalashnikov assault rifle, a home-made underbarrel grenade launcher, 11 grenade launcher rounds, two hand grenades and about 100 5.45mm cartridges.

Policemen in the eastern Chechen Nozhai-Yurt village exposed an arms cache in an abandoned building. The cache contained 2,000 cartridges, five grenade launcher rounds, 27 fuses, a TNT charge, two mines and four grenades.
