5 CHECHEN REBELS KILLED, 2 WOUNDED IN AGISHTY ENGAGEMENT

KHANKALA, February 22 (AVN) - Chechen rebels have launched 11 attacks, including eight at night, on federal military and police positions since Wednesday, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters told the Military News Agency.

Of these four took place in the Oktyabrsky district of Grozny, the spokesman noted.

The military say that four elite policemen from Novosibirsk were wounded in Wednesday's shootout in the Chechen Chernorechye village. Rebels set off a landmine when the Interior Ministry troops servicemen were marching along a street in Grozny's Leninsky district. No casualties were reported.

Engineers have defused six landmines in the past 24 hours, including two planted in the Leninsky and one in the Oktyabrsky districts of Grozny.

Five rebels were killed and two wounded in an engagement near the Agishty village overnight to Thursday. As many as 13 suspected rebels were detained following search and preventive operations.

A radio intercept had it that warlord Khattab ordered all rebels that had undergone treatment in Azerbaijan and that could carry arms to return to Chechnya to restore combat abilities of the rebel groups operating in the republic.
