NUCLEAR SUB REPAIRING PLANT MASTERS FISHING VESSELS REPAIRS

SNEZHNOGORSK, Murmansk Region, February 23 (AVN) - The local Nerpa ship-repairing plant originally intended for working with nuclear submarines has mastered repairs of fishing vessels, Nerpa Director Pavel Steblin said on Friday.

Nerpa repaired the last submarine in 1996, Steblin told the Military News Agency.

The plant completed modernisation of the Variant medium tonnage freezing trawler in early 2001, the director went on. The enterprise got the order by winning a tender that also involved shipbuilders of Poland and Norway.

Nerpa doubled the Variant's hold capacity and equipped the vessel with a fish processing system that produces canned fish and fillet of fish.

The shipyard is repairing two similar vessels, Steblin said. Besides, it will soon take part in implementation of the fishing vessel construction programme that also involves other defence industry enterprises located on the shores of the Kola Bay.
