UPPER HOUSE COMMITTEE TO CONSIDER CONTROL OVER DEFENCE SPENDING

MOSCOW, March 13 (AVN) - The defence and security committee of the Federation Council upper house of parliament will discuss on Tuesday the report of Auditing Chamber Inspector Vladimir Ulyanov on the results of control over federal defence spending, a council spokesman told the Military News Agency.

Lawmakers decided to discuss the report due to the sacking of Colonel-General Georgy Oleinik, former head of the Defence Ministry main department of military budget and financing, the spokesman said. Oleinik was charged with embezzlement and power abuse.

The committee will consider implementation of the Russian-US intergovernmental agreement on use of enriched uranium extracted from nuclear weapons. Lawmakers are likely to discuss ratification of the Russian-Tajik agreement on the status and stationing terms of the Russian military base in Tajikistan, as well as the treaty on expansion of military co-operation and arms trade between Russia and Uzbekistan.

Also on the agenda are the statute of the expert council under the defence and security committee and a draft inquiry to Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov that requests data on the progress of preparations for the Kursk submarine recovery.
