MOSCOW DISTRICT TO WITHDRAW ITS 15th REGIMENT FROM CHECHNYA IN MARCH

MOSCOW, March 14 (AVN) - The Guard Taman division will withdraw a task force of its 15th motorised rifle regiment from Chechnya this month, a spokesman for the Moscow military district headquarters said on Wednesday.

The first train with servicemen of the regiment will leave the Grozny suburb Khankala on March 20, the spokesman told the Military News Agency.

The regiment has taken part in combat operations in Chechnya since October 1999. It was to have returned to its permanent stationing area in the Alabino station of the Moscow region yet in October 2000. However the General Staff extended the regiment's term in Chechnya as the unit command had mastered the theatre of operations and gained huge experience in mountain raids. The decision was made due to escalation of search operations against rebels during the winter campaign.

The task force has recently been accomplishing missions in eastern Chechnya, controlling foothills of the Nozhai-Yurt district.
