CHECHEN REBELS TRIED FOR GENOCIDE PLEAD GUILTY OF RAPE, MURDER

PYATIGORSK, North Caucasus, April 3 (AVN) - Two Chechen rebels on trial in Pyatogorsk have pleaded guilty of two crimes, a rape and a murder, the Military News Agency learned on Tuesday.

Ramzes Gaichayev and Ruslan Khalidov are charged with genocide of Russians in Chechnya. Khalidov has pleaded guilty of raping a young woman resident of the Chervlyonnaya village and Gaichiyayev of murdering her.

The court has interrogated eight out of 23 people summoned to testify - three victims and five witnesses, all residents of Chervlyonnaya. A special bus with guards went to the village from Pyatigorsk to bring the victims and witnesses to court.

Judges are expected to announce a break in the trial on Friday, the press service of the Stavropol territory court's permanent session in Mineralnye Vody told the Agency. The break is likely to last until April 9. The inquiry should be completed by then, and the court will get down to debates, the press service said.
