WHITE-COLLAR CRIME RATE STILL GROWING IN RUSSIA

MOSCOW, April 3 (AVN) - The number of white-collar crimes in private companies makes over 30 percent of all crimes of that kind detected in Russia this year, Major General Nikolai Nino, head of the Interior Ministry's main department for combating economic crimes, said on Tuesday.

The general white-collar crime rate grew 12.6 percent in the first quarter of 2001 in comparison with the similar period of 2000, while its growth in private companies made 84.4 percent, Nino told the Military News Agency.

The most common crime is bribe-taking, the general said. Russia has been registering almost 1,000 cases of bribe taking a month this year, with the total number making 3,176. Criminal cases related to more than a half of exposed bribe-takings have been submitted to court and 543 people have been brought to justice.

As to while collar offences in private companies, the most common crime is bribery. Its rate grew 96.6 percent in comparison with the similar period of 2000. As many as 44 people were convicted last month and over 800 criminal cases are being tried by courts.
