BELARUS TO REDUCE TERM OF ACTIVE DUTY SERVICE

MINSK, April 4 (AVN) - Belarussian Defence Minister Leonid Maltsev said on Wednesday the term of active duty service in the national Armed Forces would be reduced considerably in the coming year or two.

The current term of active duty service makes 18 months for regular recruits and 12 months for recruits with higher education, a spokesman for the Defence Ministry told the Military News Agency. He declined to disclose the new term of service, saying only that preparations for the reduction were underway.

The move is motivated to the general course towards establishment of a professional army in Belarus, increase in the number of professional servicemen and possible reduction of the army personnel, the spokesman stressed.
