MOSCOW, April 5 (AVN) - Colonel Nikolai Mayorov, commander of the 331st paratrooper regiment, was promoted to the position of the Ivanovo-based 98th airborne division deputy commander, a spokesman for the Airborne Staff's personnel department told the Military News Agency on Thursday.
Mayorov, who was awarded the Hero of Russia title last year, owes his promotion to courage and heroism displayed during the anti-guerrilla operation in the North Caucasus. He is the fifth airborne unit commander who has been promoted recently.
Earlier, the Airborne commander and defence minister promoted Colonel Valentin Polyansky from commander of the 199th paratrooper regiment to deputy commander of the 106th airborne division stationed in Tula; Hero of Russia Colonel Gevorg Isakhanyan from commander of the 234th paratrooper regiment to first deputy chief-of-staff of the 76th airborne division stationed in Pskov; and Colonel Sergei Melentyev from commander of the 104th paratrooper regiment to deputy commander of the 76th airborne division.
Another prominent airborne officer, Colonel Yuri Em, commander of the 247 airborne assault regiment, was appointed deputy prime minister of Chechnya. He is tasked to co-ordinate military issues. He has also been assigned to active reserve of the Russian Defence Ministry.
