REBELS ATTACK FED POSITIONS, INSTALLATIONS 3 TIMES IN CHECHNYA

KHANKALA, April 6 (AVN) - Chechen rebels have attacked federal positions and installations using small arms three times in the past 24 hours, a spokesman for the unified federal group in the North Caucasus told the Military News Agency on Friday.

One of the attacks targeted a military column with servicemen of the prosecutor's office of Grozny's Oktyabrsky district, the spokesman said. The federals fired back and dispersed the rebels without suffering any casualties.

As many as 7,255 people, 2,184 vehicles and 730 houses were checked during planned operations in Grozny and nine suspected rebels were detained.

Two unidentified persons attempted to break through the checkpoint on a petrol tanker in the Staropromyslovsky district of Grozny overnight to Friday. Having fired warning shots servicemen opened fire at the tanker. The vehicle's driver and passenger were wounded and detained.

During search operations federal units defused two landmines and confiscated three grenade launchers, a hunting rifle, a small-bore rifle, four hand grenades, nine grenades for under-barrel grenade launchers and 15kg of marijuana.
