99TH SELF-PROPELLED ARTILLERY REGIMENT WITHDRAWN FROM CHECHNYA

NIZHNY NOVGOROD, April 11 (AVN) - The 99th self-propelled artillery regiment of the 3rd Visla motorised rifle division of permanent readiness completed withdrawal from Chechnya on Wednesday, a spokesman for the 22nd combined arms army headquarters told the Military News Agency.

The third train with personnel and armament of this unit arrived at the regiment's permanent location in the Mulino garrison, Nizhny Novgorod region, on Wednesday.

The regiment started combat operations in the North Caucasus on October 2, 1999. It distinguished itself in elimination of guerrillas defending the northern entrance to the Argun gorge and in capture of the Shatoi village. The regiment provided artillery support to federal formations operating in the south of the Urus-Martan district of Chechnya and in the north of the Argun gorge in 2000. Two officers, two sergeants and two privates of the regiment were killed. As many as 360 servicemen received state awards, including 12 servicemen that received the Order of Courage. Regiment Commander Colonel Arkady Korolkov got the title of Hero of Russia.

A special train with 300 policemen is to arrive in Nizhny Novgorod from Chechnya on Wednesday. They guarded public order in Gudermes for three months.
