SOVETSKAYA GAVAN, Sakhalin, April 18 (AVN) - Three submarines organic to the Sakhalin Flotilla of the Pacific Fleet are to be sent for scrapping to the Maritime territory in the near future, a spokesman for the Sovetskaya Gavan garrison command told the Military News Agency on Wednesday.
At present the submarines are situated near the Zavety Ilyicha village in the Khabarovsk territory. A coastal base of the flotilla was located there before 1990. It included a separate submarine division.
At that time the idea of the fleet command to unload radioactive reactor gags from mothballed submarines near the village caused protests among the locals. The situation with submarine storage was aggravated by lack of the necessary examination of the military installations's underwater parts.
According to the spokesman, the submarines with average age of 25 years will be scrapped at the Zvezda defence industry plant in the Maritime territory in autumn this year.
