ABOUT 21,000 FINANCIAL CRIMES EXPOSED IN FIRST QUARTER OF 2001

MOSCOW, April 26 (AVN) - Policemen dealing with economic crimes exposed 21,282 crimes committed in the state credit and financial system this year, a spokesman for the main information centre of the Russian Interior Ministry told the Military News Agency on Thursday.

This figure is 26.5 percent higher than for the same period in 2000. About the one fourth of those crimes are grave and extremely grave, said the spokesman.

As many as 1,593 criminals have already been brought to justice this year and about 6,955 cases in credit and financial sphere are being tried by courts now.

Commenting the statistics a representative of the Main department for combating economic crimes said, that the increase of the financial crimes is the result of the close co-operation with the Bank of Russia. When receiving information on operations of a doubtful nature law-enforcers carry out complex checks of firms and banks concluding such deals.
