ABOUT 8,000 CRIMES COMMITTED IN RUSSIA DAILY

MOSCOW, April 27 (AVN) - About 8,000 crimes are committed in Russia daily, Lieutenant General Vyacheslav Trubnikov, head of the Interior Ministry main criminal investigation department, said on Friday.

Almost half of the registered offences are detected hot on the trail, Trubnikov told the Military News Agency. Another 15 to 20 percent are investigated and detected in "some time", he said.

Besides, every day policemen detain over 40 persons evading investigators and courts, seize up to 80 hijacked cars, up to 50 pieces of arms and five to 10 home-made bombs, the general noted.

According to him, among the main destabilising factors of the current operative situation are illegal arms turnover and "extensive arms possession by the population." In the first quarter of 2001 alone 676 pieces of firearms were stolen or lost and 3,510 crimes involving arms and explosive devices were committed.
