BELARUS TO RE-OPEN WARRANT OFFICER SCHOOLS

MINSK, May 7 (AVN) - A school of warrant officers will be opened on the basis of a regiment of the Belarussian army's 72nd training centre, a spokesman for the Belarussian Defence Ministry said on Monday.

The regiment is stationed in the Pechi village near the city of Borisov, the spokesman told the Military News Agency.

The school's academic year will last five months. The educational establishment will teach 10 qualifications, such as commander of motorised rifle platoon, commander of tank platoon, petty officer of a formation, chief of small-arms and close combat means stocks, specialists of the rear and artillery as well as specialists in repair and stockpiling of ordnance and automobiles..

Warrant officer schools were closed in Belarus in 1993 while the rank of warrant officer remained. It was commissioned on professional servicemen who occupied warrant officer posts for one to two years. However this practice turned ineffective and caused an acute shortage of warrant officers in in the Armed Forces, the spokesman said.

The school studies are planned to start two times a year, on February 1 and August 1. The number of cadets will depend on the Armed Forces' needs in specialists of this profile. There will be no women in such schools, the spokesman stressed.
