MURDERED BRIGADE COMMANDER TO BE BURIED IN CENTRAL RUSSIA TUESDAY

NIZHNY NOVGOROD, May 7 (AVN) - The commander of an operative brigade of the Interior Ministry troops murdered overnight to May 5 will be buried in the town of Bogorodskoye in the Nizhny Novgorod region on Tuesday, a spokesman for the Volga military district headquarters told the Military News Agency.

Colonel Nikolai Karpovich, commander of the Shumilov operative brigade, returned from Chechnya not long ago. Units of his brigade have been involved in the anti-guerrilla operation in the North Caucasus for almost two years. Nevertheless, investigators believe that the murder has nothing to do with Chechnya.

The police have detained three suspected murderers. They had the things stolen from the officer, such as the golden wedding ring. According to investigators, Karpovich died of blows that caused serious injuries, such as fracture of the base of the skull and numerous contusions.

The colonel will be buried at a Bogorodsk cemetery not far from his brigade's stationing areas. Colonel General Vyacheslav Tikhomirov, commander of the Interior Ministry troops and deputy defence minister, has expressed condolences to Karpovich's family.

Karpovich was promoted to brigade commander from the post of deputy brigade commander last year. In Chechnya, he was acting commander of the brigade-size task force of the Interior Ministry troops. According to data obtained by the Agency, the troops command was planning to promote Kaprovich to major general in the near future. The officer had a wife, two children and a grandson.
