RUSSIAN BORDER GUARD PATROL COMES UNDER FIRE IN TAJIKISTAN

DUSHANBE, May 24 (AVN) - A Russian border patrol was attacked by a group of armed people from the Afghan territory in the Panj detachment's responsibility area on south-eastern strap of the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border at 19.00 Moscow Time (1500 GMT) on Wednesday, a spokesman for the Russian border guard group headquarters in Tajikistan told the Military News Agency.

An alarm group led by the picket commander arrived at the site at the request from the patrol and came under fire too. As many as 20 people fired at border guards from the Afghan bank of the Panj River, the spokesman said.

The border guards' car was examined at the picket and a hole from a 7.62mm Kalashnikov assault rifle bullet was found in it. There were no victims among the border guards, but as a result of the attack a section of engineering barrages was damaged. The patrol did not fired back.

The territory where the border guards were attacked from is controlled by the radical Taliban movement.
