RUSSIAN SC SEC, UN DRUG CONTROL CHIEF CALL FOR CO-OPERATION AGAINST TERRORISM

MOSCOW, June 4 (AVN) - Russia's contacts with UN bodies for combating illegal drug trafficking and terrorism help create a wide-scale political and legal basis for international anti-terrorist co-operation, Russian Security Council Secretary Vladimir Rushailo told reporters on Monday after his meeting with Pino Arlacci, head of the UN Drug Control Programme.

During the meeting the officials discussed a wide scale of issues related to Russian-UN co-operation in various spheres including maintenance of international security. The parties especially stressed the need to combat shadow economy and money laundering. That is why the most important sphere is the drug trafficking which is one of the most intolerable ways of getting profits. The majority of those profits goes for financing activities of various terrorist formations. According to Rushailo, it makes drug trafficking the problem a global problem. Co-ordination of activities at the interstate level is extremely important in combating terrorism, he stressed.

Rushailo informed Arlacci on measures against terrorism within the framework of the CIS and expressed his assurance that the recently established CIS anti-terrorist centre would co-operate with the UN programme.
