PUTIN APPOINTS HEAD OF ARMED FORCES DEPT FOR COMBAT TRAINING

MOSCOW, June 6 (AVN) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Lieutenant-General Alexander Skorodumov head of the Armed Forces main department for combat training, the Military News Agency learnt on Wednesday.

Prior to his current appointment Skorodumov was deputy commander of the Siberian military district. He was born in the village of Peno in the Tver region in 1948. Has been serving in the Armed Forces since 1966. Graduated from the Leningrad high learning general-command college, the Frunze Military Academy and the General Staff Military Academy.

Skorodumov took different posts from platoon commander to corps chief-of-staff. He was appointed deputy commander of the Trans-Baikal military district in charge of combat training and head of the combat training department in 1996. He was deputy commander of the Trans-Caucasus military district after September 1998, then commander of the Siberian military district. He took part in combat operations in Afghanistan and in the North Caucasus.

After Skorodumov's appointment only the posts of Land Forces chief-of-staff and Armed Forces missile and artillery commander are left vacant.
