FED POLICE, TROOPS ELIMINATE SIX REBELS IN CHECHNYA SINCE THURSDAY

KHANKALA, June 8 (AVN) - Special groups of the federal army and police eliminated six rebels and seized a huge amount of arms and ammo overnight to Friday and the following morning, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters in the North Caucasus told the Military News Agency.

Two rebels ran into an ambush on the eastern outskirts of Argun, another one near Alkhan-Kala, two on the northern outskirts of Bamut and one more 2km north-west of Kulary. All of them tried to put up resistance but were shot dead in brief shootouts.

Servicemen and policemen seized six antitank guided missiles, 63 hand grenades, 13 antitank mines, nine antipersonnel mines, and 2.9kg of explosives from various caches in the Vedeno district of the breakaway republic. Staffers of military commandant's offices confiscated 10 Kalashnikov assault rifles and two 400g TNT charges in the Leninsky district of Grozny, as well as six Kalashnikov assault rifles, flares and over 2,500 cartridges in the Gikalovsky village during mop-up operations.

Engineering units checked 260km of motorways and defused four powerful landmines.
