REBELS INJURE FOUR POLICEMEN, INTERIOR MINISTRY SERVICEMAN IN CHECHNYA

KHANKALA, June 22 (AVN) - Chechen rebels made two blasts and attacked police formations and Interior Ministry units nine times on Thursday, a spokesman for the ministry's department for Chechnya told the Military News Agency.

No people died but four policemen and an Interior Ministry serviceman were injured, the spokesman said.

An explosive device made on the basis of a 152mm artillery shell with electric detonator blasted in the Staropromyslovy district of Grozny when a policeman attempted to defuse it. The policeman was injured and taken to hospital.

An unidentified explosive device went off 150m for an observation point of an Interior Ministry engineering and scouting unit in the Chiri-Yurt village at 15.00 Moscow time (1100 GMT). As a result a serviceman was injured.

Rebels fired a grenade launcher an Ural truck with elite policemen in the Leninsky district of Grozny at 12.00 Moscow time (0800 GMT). As a result three policemen were injured.

Policemen carried out 12 search and preventive operations in Chechnya on Tuesday, the spokesman said. They checked 15,415 people and 12,414 vehicles and registered 652 administrative offences, including 145 violations of passport rules.

The police seized five grenade launchers, five assault rifles, a flame-thrower, a pistol, four hunting rifles, 230 artillery and mortar shells, 80 various grenade launcher rounds, 16 hand grenades, an air bomb, 3,138 small-arms cartridges, 2.4kg of explosives and 10.8kg of drugs. Besides, 16 illegal oil refineries were eliminated.

Policemen checking reconnaissance data in the Roshni-Yurt village of the Urus-Martan district found a cache with 212 82mm mortar shells near the local cemetery on Thursday. Local residents found corpses of two locals and three unidentified men 4km from the town of Kurchaloi at 9.30 Moscow time (0530 GMT).

Rebels attacked deputy chief of the Chechen Interior Ministry's anti-mafia police department. The gunmen wounded him, took his car and disappeared.
