UN PROPOSES HELP TO RUSSIA'S FLOOD-STRICKEN YAKUTIA

MOSCOW, June 22 (AVN) - The United Nations and other international humanitarian organisations doubt that Russia would independently restore houses for 17,000 flood-stricken residents of Yakutia by September, Deputy Emergencies Minister Yuri Brazhnikov said on Friday.

The United Nations has informed Russia that it is ready to support the relocation programme for Yakutia's population if there is a corresponding request from Russia, Brazhnikov told the Military News Agency.

The term stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin is quite strict, but the programme can be implemented if it is funded properly. However Moscow thanks everybody who proposes help and does not reject assistance of the global community.

Such aid continues to arrive, Brazhnikov said. The Charity to Children Fund and the Swedish Red Cross will soon send medical equipment and children's clothes worth over USD200,000 to Yakutia's hospitals and the committee on family and childhood affairs under the Yakutian president.
