THREE POLICEMEN DIE IN CHECHNYA MONDAY

KHANKALA, June 26 (AVN) - Chechen rebels staged one blast and opened fire at police formations and Interior Ministry troops units 10 times on Monday, killing three policemen and injuring four, a spokesman for the ministry's department for Chechnya told the Military News Agency.

A radio-controlled landmine blasted a UAZ jeep with officers of a mobile detachment in the Leninsky district of Grozny. One officer was killed and two more taken to hospital. Tow hours later a Zhiguli car with elite policemen came under automatic rifle fire in the same area. The attackers killed two policemen and got hold of a Makarov pistol with 32 cartridges and a service ID.

The temporary barracks of Ulyanovsk region elite policemen came under fire in the village of Ken-Yurt in the Grozny rural district. One officer was wounded and taken to hospital.

A police motorcade returning to their stationing area from the Itum-Kale district was attacked in Grozny's Oktyabrsky district at 19.10 Moscow time (1510 GMT). One officer was wounded.

Federal policemen carried out 15 search and preventive operations in Chechnya on Monday, the spokesman went on. They checked 16,583 people and 9,986 vehicles and registered 415 administrative offences, including 116 violations of passport rules.

The police seized 16 grenade launchers, five assault rifles, a machine-gun, five hunting rifles, 110 grenade launcher rounds, 89 hand grenades, 16 artillery shells, 4,488 small-arms cartridges and 1.9kg of explosives. Besides, 14 illegal oil refineries were eliminated.
