RUSSIA'S WESTERNMOST ENCLAVE WANTS MORE FUNDS FOR VESSELS PRODUCTION

KALININGRAD, July 3 (AVN) - The Kaliningrad region legislature applied to the State Duma lower house of Russian parliament and Navy Commander Vladimir Kuroyedov requesting further placement of the defence order with the Pribaltijsk-based Yantar shipyard and improvement of its financing, a spokesman for the legislature administration said on Tuesday.

The legislature said in its statement that funds for production of the new-generation Novik multipurpose guard ship of Project 12441 laid down in 1997 were not provided regularly. Moreover, proposals on mothballing the production of that project's vessels have appeared which can delay supplies of new combat ships to the Navy for several years. The measure will have serious negative consequences for the shipyard and the region which occupies a special geopolitical position and plays an important part in backing Russian national interests in the Baltic region.
