REBELS KILL TWO POLICEMEN IN CHECHNYA WEDNESDAY

KHANKALA, July 5 (AVN) - Chechen rebels made one blast and attacked police and Interior Ministry units 11 times on Wednesday killing two policemen and injuring three more policemen and a local resident, a spokesman for the ministry's department in Chechnya told the Military News Agency.

A resident of the Gikalovsky village touched off an antipersonnel mine at the Goryacheistochinskaya village near Grozny 40 metres from the local military commandant's office, the spokesman said. He was taken to hospital with numerous fragmentation injuries.

Officers of a special quick response unit of the Penza region police department came under fire in Urus-Martan at 2.30 Moscow time on Wednesday (2230 GMT on Tuesday) while checking a private house. As a result police Captain Yuri Volodin, 34, died.

Rebels riding in cars attacked servicemen of elite police unit of Interior Ministry's department for Chechnya in Grozny's Zavodskoi district at 18.20 Moscow time (1420 GMT). The reprisal fire eliminated two rebels but Private Dukayev was killed and policemen Abdulkadyrov, Khatuyev and Bochayev were wounded and taken to hospital.

Rebels also attacked checkpoints in the Leninsky and Oktyabrsky districts of Grozny, a command post in Argun, police department installations in Shali and Vedeno and a mobile post in the Achkhoi-Martan district on the road between Sernovodsk and Samashki. Fire was returned in each case and no casualties were registered.

Federal policemen carried out 11 search and preventive operations in Chechnya on Wednesday, the spokesman said. They checked 17,122 people and 11,943 vehicles and registered 1,238 administrative offences, including 189 violations of passport rules.

The police seized three grenade launchers, four assault rifles, a rifle, two pistols, four hunting rifles, 18 mortar and artillery shells, 43 hand grenades, 7,306 small-arms cartridges and 2.9kg of explosives. Besides, six illegal oil refineries were eliminated.
