KALININGRAD, July 6 (AVN) - Private Maxim Starostin who secured the ammo stock in the 14th Ozersk training centre of the Kaliningrad regional border guard department went AWOL on Friday morning, a spokesman for the regional police department said.
Starostin was armed with an AKM assault rifle and 60 cartridges. He went to the highway, stopped an Audi-100 car, threw away the driver and drove away. After the chase organised by police the car crashed into a tree near the Kadymovka village. However Starostin was not going to surrender, he started firing his assault rifle and wounded a policeman in the chest. The reprisal fire wounded Starostin's legs and he was disarmed.
Currently Starostin and the wounded policeman are in the Chernyakhovsk military hospital. A criminal case was launched to investigate Starostin's AWOL.
Starostin was drafted by the Podolsk military commissioner's office in the Moscow region in autumn 2000.
