RUSSIAN COUNCIL ON CHEMICAL WEAPONS SCRAPPING HOLDS FIRST SESSION

MOSCOW, July 12 (AVN) -- The interdepartmental scientific council on chemical and biological weapons conventional problems under the presidium of Russian Academy of Sciences and Russian Ammunition Agency held its first session here on Thursday.

Russia needs a council that can efficiently co-ordinate activities of all bodies operating in the sphere, Sergei Kiriyenko, chairman of the state commission on chemical disarmament, told the session. An independent and competent expert examination and selection of optimal scrapping technologies is necessary, he stressed. Besides, the council should enjoy the trust of the global community.

Kiriyenko noted that the Russian Ammunition Agency did a good job, but there were still many important problems that should be solved. The Agency's director general Zinovy Pak said that the first session of the council put an end to establishment of the single system competent enough to manage chemical disarmament.

Council chairman Academician Anatoly Kuntsevich said elaboration of clear and precise state policy in the sphere of chemical disarmament was among the council's main tasks.
