RUSSIAN SPECIALISTS TO INSPECT RADAR STATION IN AZERBAIJAN

BAKU, July 18 (AVN) - Russian specialists who are to arrive here on Wednesday will define the influence level of the Russian Defence Ministry's Gabalinskaya radar station on environment and local population health, a spokesman for the Azerbaijani government told the Military News Agency.

Russian specialists together with their Azerbaijani colleagues will sum up work results of the bilateral commission on the problem research.

The Russian delegation is headed by Alexander Natalenko, co-chairman of the bilateral commission and deputy minister on natural resources. During the talks with Azerbaijani Healthcare Minister Ali Insanov both officials will define the sum of damage from the radar station. Later the documents will be delivered to republic's President Geidar Aliyev.

The parties also plan to complete negotiations on the international agreement draft on the radar station's status and joint use. The agreement is supposed to be signed during Aliyev's visit to Moscow in November.

The radar station was constructed on the north of Azerbaijan for earlier detection of beyond-the-horizon targets in 1985. The network of nine similar radar stations was established on the perimeter of the whole USSR territory under the auspices of the ABM Treaty. Currently the information from the radar station is provided not only to Russia but to all members of the CIS Collective Security Treaty.

The radar station is the only Russian military installation in Azerbaijan since early 90s.
