RUSSIAN DM TO INTRODUCE NEW PACIFIC FLEET COMMANDER TO SUBORDINATES

MOSCOW, July 23 (AVN) - During his visit to Far Eastern and Siberian garrisons which is start on Friday Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov will introduce Vice Admiral Gennady Suchkov, new commander of the Pacific Fleet, to the fleet's administration and headquarters, a spokesman for the Defence Ministry said on Monday.

Suchkov was appointed to the post by President Vladimir Putin on July 20 and replaced Admiral Mikhail Zakharenko who became a high-ranking official being appointed first deputy Navy commander, the spokesman told the Military News Agency.

Suchkov was born in the Mitropolye village of the Nizhny Novgorod region on January 7, 1947. He graduated from the Frunze higher navy college in 1969, 6th higher officer classes of the Navy in 1978 and Naval Academy in 1983. Suchkov served at the Northern Fleet since 1995. He went through the posts of torpedo group commander of the submarine mine and torpedo unit to commander of the 4th submarines squadron. Suchkov was first deputy commander of the Black Sea Fleet from January 1995 and deputy commander of the fleet from 1998.
