TBILISI, July 25 (AVN) - Georgia is installing the Iori management, control and surveillance system in its border guard facilities, including on the border with Russia, State Border Protection Department chief Valery Chkheidze said on Wednesday.
Georgia loses up to USD70m a year due to imperfection of the border and customs systems, Chkheidze said. The Iori system was tested at mountain sections of the Russia-Georgia border and proved efficient there. Its gradual introduction intended for four years is financed by the United States which allocates USD50m to 60m for this purpose.
A total of 130 short-wave transmitters will be placed on the border and in the sea to register any movement in a specific zone. The system's selected components have been installed in guard facilities on the Russia-Georgia border in the villages of Shatili and Omalo.
According to Chkheidze, the United States will present a guard boat and a light patrol plane to Georgian border guards in the first quarter of 2002.
