FED COMMAND SENDS REINFORCEMENTS TO CHECHEN FOOTHILLS

KHANKALA, August 15 (AVN) - The unified federal command has sent additional military units to patrol roads connecting the Chechen villages of Sayasan, Nozhai-Yurt, Simsir, Makhkety and Kharchoi as rebels have scaled up attacks and mining activities in the area, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters said on Wednesday.

Reinforcements have also been transferred to the Kiri, Kenkhi and Sharoi villages, where guerrilla operations are on the rise, the spokesman told the Military News Agency.

Federals spotted and destroyed 23 caches with arms and ammo in Chechnya on Tuesday. Six caches were found in the Urus-Martan district, five in the Achkhoi-Martan district and two in the Itum-Kale district. Besides, servicemen destroyed about 70 illegal oil refineries, including in the Makhety, Kharachoi, Khal-Kiloi and Dai villages where they are stubbornly restored by local residents.

As many as 93 pieces of small arms, 14 grenade launchers, 78 hand grenades, 19 artillery systems, 27 mortar mines, 40 rounds to portable antitank grenade launchers, about 6,000 cartridges and 7kg of explosives were confiscated from locals. Sappers destroyed 14 landmines planted by guerrillas near the villages of Chishki, Shatoi, Khal-Kiloi, Sayasan, Dzhugurty and Chiri-Yurt.
