DIVERS TO RESUME CUTTING HOLES IN KURSK SUB HULL

MOSCOW, August 23 (AVN) - Deep sea divers will resume the cutting of technological openings in the hull of the 3rd compartment of the dead Kursk submarine on Thursday, a spokesman for the Navy Staff told the Military News Agency.

Divers continued works on removal of the submarine's light hull fragments and clearance of inter-hull space since Wednesday, the spokesman said.

Specialists of the GS-56 hydrographic vessel crew will make detailed photographs of the seabed on the way of the Kursk's towing on Thursday. The first of two pontoons which will be used to transport the submarine to the dock has been set afloat. It was made at the Severodvinsk machine-building enterprise in the Arkhangelsk region. The protocol on the pontoons' commissioning was signed by Jan van Seumeren, vice president of the Dutch Mammoet company, and Vladimir Pastukhov, director general of the Russian enterprise. Both pontoons will be delivered to the operation site by September 15.

The weather conditions in the operation area have become better, the spokesman said. The wind strength is five to 10m/s while the sea swell is no more than two points.
