SAMARA, Volga Region, August 24 (AVN) - Major General Alexei Verbitsky, commander of the 2nd general army, will arrive here to take his new office on August 28, a spokesman for the Samara region administration said on Friday.
The new army was established instead of the Volga military district. It will start functioning on September 1, the spokesman told the Military News Agency. The unified Volga-Ural military district will be headquartered in Yekaterinburg, while the headquarters of the 2nd army will be located in the office of the former Volga district headquarters in Samara.
Verbitsky was born in Grozny on March 30, 1954. He graduated from the higher general command college in the city of Ordzhonikidze (now Vladikavkaz) in 1975, Frunze Military Academy in 1983 and General Staff Academy in 1999.
Verbitsky served in the Odessa, Belarussian and Moscow military districts. In supper 1999 he became deputy commander of the 58th genera army headquartered in Vladikavkaz. In September 1999 he was appointed deputy commander of the western federal group in Chechnya. From January to May 2000 he commanded the group. Verbitsky was appointed commander of the 2nd general army by President Vladimir Putin earlier this month.
Colonel General Anatoly Sergeyev, commander of the Volga district since 1992, will be fired due to reaching the retirement age. He turns 61 in November this year.
