RUSSIAN MILITARY EDUCATION DELEGATION LEAVES FOR JAPAN

MOSCOW, August 27 (AVN) - A Russian military delegation headed by Colonel General Viktor Barynkin, first deputy chief of the General Staff Academy, left for Japan on Monday, a spokesman for the Defence Ministry main foreign relations department said.

The main aim of the five-day visit is participation in the annual session of South-Eastern Asian military academies chiefs which takes place under the auspices of the ASEAN Regional Security Forum, the spokesman told the Military News Agency.

The session participants will discuss higher education in several South-Eastern Asian states, as well as strengthening of ties between higher educational establishments. Barynkin is also planning to meet officials of the Japanese Self-Defence Forces and study the forces' unit stationed near the Fuji-Camp village near Tokyo. There he is supposed to attend tactical training with live firing.

Officials of 20 Asia-Pacific countries will participate in the current session. A similar session will take place in Moscow in 2002 under the auspices of the Defence Ministry, the spokesman added.
