CHECHEN REBELS STAGE 17 BLASTS, 110 ATTACKS ON FEDERALS LAST WEEK

KHANKALA, August 27 (AVN) - Rebels staged 17 landmine blasts and attacked federal installations and positions 110 times in Chechnya last week, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters told the Military News Agency on Monday.

Federals registered five blasts and 57 attacks in Grozny. According to the military data, rebels acted mostly in the Leninsky and Staropromyslovsky districts of Grozny, as well as in the Kurchaloi, Shali, and Vedeno districts of the republic.

Sapper detachments disarmed 10 powerful explosive devices, including four in Grozny, last week, the spokesman said.

Rebels still try to threaten the locals who co-operate with federals. Last week federals were searching head for head of the Itum-Kale police department Israil Khafizov who had been kidnapped by rebels. Several days ago extremists got even with another local law-enforcer in that district.
