MOSCOW, August 27 (AVN) - Russian cosmonaut Georgy Grechko has been elected chief of the organisers committee of the Intercontinental Aviation Congress that will take place in Malaysia in October 2001, a spokesman for the committee told the Military News Agency on Monday.
The forum aims to pave the way for establishment of an international consortium that will unite Asian nations interested in fuller use of the Russian aerospace industry's capacities, the spokesman said.
Malaysia's economy has been the most stable in South-eastern Asia in the past 10 years. Partner relations between Russia and Malaysia, as well as bilateral military-technical co-operation in the aviation sphere, are considered quite efficient. Malaysia can serve as a bridge connecting South-eastern Asia and Russia, promoting co-operation in the fields of high technologies, cargo delivery and supplies of aircraft to the region.
The congress will involve officials of the Russian Aviation and Space Agency, Defence Ministry, large Russian and foreign airlines, aircraft production and repair plants and banks, as well as leaders of Russian regions involved in aircraft production.
Participants of the congress are expected to visit the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA 2001) that is scheduled for October 9 to 14. The event will involve companies from over 60 countries.
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad is expected to discuss organisation of the congress during his trip to Russia scheduled for September.
