VORONEZH, South-western European Russia, August 29 (AVN) - Servicemen of the Western regional border guatd department have seized RUR1.5m (USD51,060) worth of contraband on the Russia-Ukraine border this month, a spokesman for the department headquarters said on Wednesday.
Among the most popular types of contraband are fuel, lubricants and foodstuffs, including sugar and flour, which are several times more expensive in Ukraine, the spokesman told the Military News Agency.
The department's border guards and Voronezh region law-enforcers have carried out joint operations on the territories close to the Ukrainian border, which resulted in confiscation and elimination of 17t of drugs. During the past week they have destroyed crops of Indian hemp that could produce some two tons of cannabis and seized over 90kg of opium poppy.
