RUSSIAN, AFGHAN BORDER GUARDS TO DISCUSS GROWING TENSIONS ON TAJIK FRONTIER

MOSCOW, August 30 (AVN) - Russian and Afghan border guard officials will meet on Thursday at the request from the Russian party, a spokesman for the Federal Border Guard Service (FBGS) told the Military News Agency.

During the meeting the Russian party will lodge a protest to the Afghan party against violations of the Tajik state border. As it was earlier reported, Russian border guards engaged nine Afghan violators on the territory controlled by the Moscow border guard detachment a while ago.

"The past week's events when border guards seized some 180kg of drugs and had to open fire several times in response to violators' impudent actions evidence a certain escalation of tensions on the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border which is apparently initiated by the drug mafia," the spokesman said.
