FOUR STATES FINALISE DOCUMENTS ON TISA ENGINEERING BATTALION ESTABLISHMENT

KIEV, August 30 (AVN) - The draft agreement on the establishment of the Tisa multinational engineering battalion is prepared for signing here on Thursday at the working meeting of Hungarian, Slovakian, Romanian and Ukrainian Chiefs-of-Staff, Ukrainian First Deputy Chief-of-Staff Lieutenant General Nikolai Palchuk said on Thursday.

The battalion intended for eliminating the aftermath of natural disasters will be fully established by the end of 2002, Palchuk told the Military News Agency. Its mission will be of purely humanitarian nature and aimed at eliminating consequences of emergencies suffered by the four countries located on both banks of the Tisa River.

The officials agreed that the Hungarian part of the battalion will comprise 200 people and 150 pieces of equipment, Romania will contribute 200 servicemen, Slovakia will add 245 people and Ukraine 170 servicemen and 50 pieces of modernised engineering equipment.

The battalion will be stationed in Ukraine's Trans-Carparthan region.
