ITALIAN MILITARY TO INSPECT EUROPEAN RUSSIA IN FRAMEWORK OF OPEN SKIES TREATY

MOSCOW, September 3 (AVN) - A group of Italian inspectors is arriving in Moscow on Monday to conduct aerial monitoring of several installations in European Russia, a spokesman for the Defence Ministry's national centre on nuclear threat reduction told the Military News Agency.

The 12 inspectors led by Lieutenant Colonel Aloisi Enso will operate under the auspices of the Open Skies Treaty. They will use a Russian AN-30B Clank plane fitted with special equipment to do the monitoring. The plane is to take off from the Kubinka military airfield in the Moscow region. Colonel Sergei Ashurov, executive of the nuclear threat reduction centre, will accompany the Italians.

According to the spokesman, four control missions will work in Russia in September under the auspices of the Open Skies Treaty. In addition to the Italian party, Russian military installations will be inspected from the air by control groups from Germany, Norway and Denmark. Russian control groups will visit those nations in return.
