Khankala, September 4 (AVN) - Chechen rebels staged two blasts and attacked police and Interior Ministry units 16 times on Monday, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry department for Chechnya told the Military News Agency.
Five servicemen were wounded in a clash with a rebel group on the outskirts of the Starye Atagi village at 12.05 Moscow time (0805 GMT). Six rebels were eliminated as well.
According to the spokesman, the police carried out six search and preventive operations in the breakaway republic on Monday. They checked 23,709 people, 13,126 vehicles, and registered 1,028 administrative offences, including 119 violations of passport rules.
Policemen seized five assault rifles, a grenade launcher, a pistol, 12 artillery and mortar shells, 18 hand grenades, 22 grenade launcher rounds, 2,810 small-arms cartridges and 0.5kg of TNT. Besides, seven illegal oil refineries and three makeshift explosive devices were eliminated.
Strangers in camouflage shot dead a 37-year old woman in her own flat in the town of Argun at 14.45 Moscow time (1045 GMT). The strangers stole from her RUR15,000 (USD509.25) worth of jewelry. Investigation is underway.
Three rebels put up armed resistance to policemen in the Gekhi village at 21.10 Moscow time (1710 GMT). One rebel was killed, but the two others managed to escape. The killed one is being identified. An assault rifle was confiscated at the site.
