Moscow, September 7 (AVN) - Defence Ministers Sergei Ivanov of Russia and Safar Abiyev of Azerbaijan met in the Russian Defence Ministry headquarters here on Friday morning, a ministry spokesman told the Military News Agency.
The meeting was held in the eye-to-eye format and lasted for 30 minutes. The ministers were planning to discuss state and prospects of bilateral relations in the military sphere, the situation in the North Caucasus, as well as combating terrorism in the Caucasus region.
After the meeting other members of the Russian and Azerbaijani delegations will be brought in the hall for further negotiations. The parties will discuss further functioning of the Gabala missile launch early warning radar, Russia's only military installation in Azerbaijan. The radar is very important for Russia, because it controls the zone that includes Australia, a part of Africa, major share of the Atlantic Ocean, China, India, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan and Turkey.
