DEPUTY BORDER GUARD CHIEF TO CHECK RUSSIAN UNITS ON TAJIK-AFGHAN FRONTIER

Dushanbe, September 7 (AVN) - Nikolai Reznichenko, deputy director and chief-of-staff of the Federal Border Guard Service (FBGS), will check the functioning of Russian patrols on the left wing of the Panj border guard detachment, a spokesman for the Russian border guard group in Tajikistan said.

The detachment's border guards operating in the area do not leave defensive installations due to ongoing combat operations in neighbouring Afghanistan, the spokesman told the Military News Agency.

Troops of the Taliban movement were trying to attack defence positions of the Afghan government forces near the Khorzhagar village close to the Tajikistan border on Thursday and Friday. However their attempts failed, and the troops retreated. Combat actions near the borderline involved tanks and artillery.

In the past several days units of Akhmad Shah Masud carried out several offensive operations against the Taliban in the northern Afghan province of Tahor. According to Afghan military sources, the government troops eliminated and captured some 300 Talibes, seized up to 100 pieces of small arms, a SAM launcher and three artillery systems during an offensive operation near the Chal and Ishkamysh villages from Wednesday to Friday.
