GEORGIA STRENGTHENING BORDERS WITH HELP FROM FOREIGN STATES -- OFFICIAL

Tbilisi, September 7 (AVN) - Russia did not fully implement its obligations to maintain security on the Russia-Georgia border, as it still keeps the special rules of crossing the Abkhzian and South-Ossetian border sections, Valery Chkheidze, head of the Georgian state border protection department, told reporters here on Friday.

According to Chkheidze, Georgian border guards prevented illegal transit transportation of nuclear materials through the republic's territory twice on the South-Ossetian strap alone since the visa control was introduced at the Russia-Georgia border last year.

Visa control introduction did not help Russia achieve serious results in the sphere of combating terrorism though the introduction was caused by this particular reason, Chkheidze said. At the same time no terrorist has been detained on the border since the introduction.

Georgia has considerably strengthened its borders this year thanks to co-operation with foreign countries, including Russia. Chkheidze expressed appreciation towards the Federal Border Guard Service (FBGS) leadership which handed to Georgia considerable wealth, particularly, border engineering equipment. Foreign countries which play important role in the matter are also interested in turning Georgian borders into serious barriers in the way of drugs, nuclear materials and illegal migration. According to Chkheidze, it is especially important for Europe for transnational crime will attempt to use in its interests the European transport corridor which is currently being established. The USA is also among the interested countries and it has granted Georgia USD2.5m this year.
