DUSHANBE. Sept 13 (Interfax) - Afghan Security Minister Mohammad Fahimkhan has taken command over the troops of the Northern Alliance, military attache of the Afghan embassy in Russia Mohammed Saleh Registani said in Dushanbe on Thursday.
He said Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani had confirmed the appointment.
The general was introduced to the representatives of a few countries supporting the struggle of the Northern Alliance against Taliban in the Tajik capital on Thursday.
Fahimkhan, 44, is a graduate of the theological department of Kabul University. Beginning in 1973 he fought against the regimes of Daud, Taraki, Karmal and Najibullah together with Ahmad Shah Massoud. During the Soviet presence in Afghanistan, he was a field commander, the commander of the Andarab front, the chairman of the political committee and a deputy chairman of the observer council.
He was appointed as security minister in the Rabbani government in 1992.
