BOLSHOI KAMEN, Maritime Territory. Sept 17 (Interfax-AVN) - The director of the Zvezda state-owned defence industry plant has been murdered in a family fight, a spokesman for the Bolshoi Kamen police department said on Monday, citing preliminary data.
Valery Maslakov, 51, was stabbed to death by his stepson who was in a state of alcoholic addiction, the spokesman told Interfax-Military News Agency.
Maslakov joined Zvezda 27 years ago. He became the plant's director in 1991. He managed to preserve the state order for 50 percent of the enterprise's products after 1993. In order to ensure Zvezda's survival in market conditions, Maslakov did his best to include it in the group of companies co-operating with foreign partners. Six months ago the plant secured the support of Japan and installed the Landyzh system of liquid radioactive wastes scrapping. On August 2 it put in operation the facility of low-level radioactive waste processing and storage. It was designed with the help of the Defence Threat Reduction Agency under the Pentagon.
The investigation will check other stories of the murder as well, the spokesman added.
